[ the M&A Event ]

When Pitney Bowes acquired Borderfree (a cross-border e-commerce leader), the challenge was immediate: merge a nimble, cloud-native startup stack with a 100-year-old enterprise logistics giant. My mandate was to execute the Post-Merger Technical Integration, unifying two distinct cultures and codebases into a single global commerce engine.

[ My role ]

PB

New York, New York
DIRECTOR, PRODUCT TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION

I served as the technical bridge between the acquired entity (Borderfree) and the acquiring enterprise (Pitney Bowes). My role was to deconstruct the "Borderfree" platform and re-architect it as the core logic for the PB Global Ecommerce division.

I led the API Unification Strategy, transforming disparate shipping APIs into a cohesive suite that allowed retailers like Nordstrom and Macy’s to ship to 220+ countries instantly. We moved from "fragile connections" to "enterprise-grade infrastructure."

This was a masterclass in Organizational Engineering. I aligned the "move fast" ethos of the startup engineering team with the rigorous governance of a public company, ensuring the acquisition delivered on its revenue promise without stalling operations.

Strategic Outcomes

M&A Integration

The Borderfree Merger Orchestrated the post-merger technology integration of the Borderfree platform. Unified product roadmaps and engineering squads, turning a standalone acquisition into the flagship product of the Global Ecommerce division.

Global Logistics

220+ Countries Architected the cross-border logistics engine that powered international shipping for Tier-1 retailers (Macy's, Neiman Marcus). Solved the "Last Mile" data problem for global duty/tax calculation.

API Strategy

Unified Commerce API Consolidated 12+ fragmented legacy interfaces into a single RESTful API Gateway. Reduced integration time for new retail partners by 50%, accelerating the onboarding of new enterprise merchants.

Scale & Stability

Holiday Peak Volume Hardened the platform to withstand "Cyber Monday" volumes. Re-engineered the transaction processing layer to handle 10x peak load without latency, protecting millions in transactional revenue.

“Charles brought structure and clarity to a complex integration—bridging product and engineering with purpose, precision, and trust.”

Brendten Eickstaedt
Senior Director of Software Engineering, Pitney Bowes

Acquisition Strategy → Tech Consolidation → API Unification → Global Scale

Stage 01

The Audit Mapping the acquired tech stack. Identifying which legacy systems to kill, which to keep, and where the integration points (APIs) must live.

Stage 02

Cultural & Code Unification Merging not just databases, but workflows. Aligning Agile startup squads with Enterprise waterfall governance to create a hybrid delivery model.

Stage 03

Single Source of Truth Eliminating data redundancy. Creating one "Golden Record" for every parcel, whether it's shipping to Brooklyn or Berlin.

Stage 04

Cross-Border Velocity The result of integration isn't just "working systems"; it's revenue. Enabling US retailers to treat international markets as domestic ones.

[ the journey ]

Acquiring technology is financial. Integrating it is architectural.

The Philosophy

M&A often fails not because of the price, but because of the plumbing. At Pitney Bowes, I proved that successful integration requires a "Technical Diplomat"—someone who can navigate the politics of legacy code and the ambition of new innovation.

The Legacy

The work we did on the Borderfree integration set the standard for Cross-Border commerce. We built the "rails" that allow the world's largest brands to ship globally with the click of a button.
